Surfing the holidays.
The holidays are filled with family, friends, and, of course, food. But just because you’re celebrating doesn’t mean you have to throw your healthy habits out the window. Coco Pierrel, NYC’s Healthy Weight Loss Coach, shares her top tips for navigating the holidays while keeping your health and wellness goals on track. Here’s how to surf the holiday season like a pro:
1. Prioritize Veggies and Protein
Fill most of your plate with low-starch vegetables and quality protein (whether it’s turkey, ham, chicken, or beef). Vegetables are packed with fiber, which keeps you feeling full, while protein helps burn more calories through digestion. This leaves you satisfied without overindulging on carbs.
2. Be Your Own Health Advocate
It can be challenging to stick to your healthy habits at family gatherings, but don’t shy away from your dietary preferences. You can still enjoy the occasion discreetly and unapologetically by bringing dishes that suit your lifestyle, whether gluten-free, dairy-free, or otherwise. You might even surprise a few family members with how good healthy alternatives can be!
3. Save Calories for Dessert
Enjoy your holiday treats guilt-free by making smart choices throughout the day. Skip sugary mixers, limit sweet sauces like cranberry sauce to a tablespoon or two, and avoid excess sugar from sodas and fruit juices. This way, you can indulge in that slice of pie without the extra guilt.
4. Hydrate with Water
Stay hydrated by drinking half your body weight in ounces of water each day. Hydration helps detox the body, improve digestion, regulate appetite, and give you more energy. If you find plain water boring, try adding flavored electrolytes or sipping on herbal teas.
5. Eat, Don’t Graze
It’s not the holiday meals that lead to weight gain—it’s the constant snacking throughout the day. Instead of grazing, focus on staying hydrated, catching up with family, and staying active. When it’s time for the meal, you’ll be able to enjoy your food without feeling overly full.
6. Move Your Body
Holidays don’t have to mean skipping your workout routine. Even a gentle yoga session or a 30-minute walk can make a big difference. Walking in the cold can burn even more calories, so bundle up and enjoy the fresh air!
7. It’s Not All About the Food!
Remember, the holidays are about more than just food. Spend time with loved ones, explore new places, laugh, and truly unplug. Focusing on the experience will help you feel fulfilled in more ways than one.
